Livestock Traders in Rukungiri Decry Extended Quarantine Amidst Christmas Festivities
Rukungiri: As the world celebrates Christmas, livestock traders in Rukungiri District are expressing frustration over the continued quarantine imposed on cattle markets in the district.
They argue that this restriction has negatively impacted their livelihoods, especially as neighboring districts operate their markets without any disruptions.
The livestock traders including Moses Mitima and Dan, voiced their dissatisfaction on December 24. They lamented that while other districts like Kanungu, Ntungamo, and Mitooma have lifted livestock market restrictions, Rukungiri remains under lockdown.
They added that the cattle market was their source of income. Now, with the market closed, they are unable to earn, yet they have loans and other financial obligations that depend on this business.
The Chairperson of Rukungiri Mobile Market Traders Association, Deus Ahimbisibwe, highlighted the broader implications of the quarantine. Speaking on behalf of the traders, he pointed out that the closure has not only hurt animal traders but also disrupted the livelihoods of many locals. Farmers are unable to sell cattle to meet urgent needs such as school fees, debt repayments, and agricultural investments.
He explained that this festive season was supposed to be a prime opportunity for them to earn from their business but they’re now stranded because the market closure has cut off their income.
In response, Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer Dr. Johnson Ninsiima confirmed that the quarantine remains in effect. He explained that the district is awaiting a visit from the Commissioner of Animal Health, Dr. Anna Rose Ademun, who will oversee testing of livestock to confirm whether the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak has been fully contained.
Rukungiri was among the districts affected by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak this year. However, traders claim that neighboring districts have since lifted restrictions, putting Rukungiri at a disadvantage.
The traders are urging district authorities to expedite the reopening of the cattle market, emphasizing the urgency of restoring their livelihoods during this festive season.
