Rukungiri’s HIV Prevalence Hits 8.3%, Young Women Most Affected, TASO Warns

Rukungiri: The Head of The Aid’s Support Organization (TASO) in Rukungiri district Agnes Kateeba has revealed that the district’s HIV prevalence currently stands at 8.3 percent, much higher compared to the national average of 5.2 percent.

Speaking with our reporter, Kateeba explained that eight out of every 100 people tested in Rukungiri are HIV-positive, compared to five nationally.

She warned residents against becoming complacent, stressing that HIV remains a serious public health concern that requires continued prevention efforts.

She revealed that young women aged between 18 and 25 are the most affected, accounting for 66 percent of TASO clients receiving HIV treatment and care, while men account for 34 percent.

Kateeba attributed the high HIV burden among young women largely to poverty, saying economic hardship pushes some into risky sexual relationships.

She urged people living with HIV to adhere to their antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and attend routine medical check-ups every three months, noting that consistent treatment suppresses the virus, improves health, and significantly reduces the risk of transmission.

Kateeba further cautioned the public against self-medicating or relying solely on HIV self-test kits without confirmation from qualified health workers.
