Southern Division Passes UGX 470.7 Million Budget for 2026/2027

Rukungiri: The Southern Division Council of Rukungiri Municipality has approved a budget of UGX 470,724,849 for the Financial Year 2026/2027.

Out of the total budget, UGX 376,381,780 (79%) is expected to come from local revenue, while UGX 94,343,069 (21%) will be received from Central Government transfers. Leaders said this shows the Division’s continued effort to strengthen local revenue collection.

In the Financial Year 2025/2026, the Division operated on a budget of UGX 397,647,886, where UGX 326,375,768 (82%) came from local revenue and UGX 71,272,118 (18%) from Central Government.

The budget was presented on April 28, by the Division Chairperson, Denis Ngabirano during a council meeting which was held at Division offices.

Key priorities in the new budget include completing Phase 9 of the Division offices to make them fully usable, maintaining existing projects, and improving hygiene and sanitation in all wards. Other focus areas include monitoring government projects, maintaining water sources, and increasing public awareness on government programs and health issues such as HIV/AIDS, and livestock diseases.

The Division will also promote gender equality, support orphans and vulnerable children, and continue implementing government programs like the Parish Development Model.

While presenting the budget, the Chairperson called for teamwork among leaders and stakeholders to ensure the Division collects the expected revenue. He urged timely identification of taxpayers, continuous public sensitization, and stronger systems to improve revenue collection.

The Deputy Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, Bernard Turyahabwe, thanked council members for their participation and passing the budget. He encouraged technical staff to continue guiding the Council to make informed decisions.

The Deputy Town Clerk, Justus Ampeire, also appreciated the Council for approving the budget. He urged members to follow the budget plan to ensure successful implementation. He also commended the Division Chairperson for his leadership and contribution to development.

The meeting ended with the awarding of gifts to Division Councillors and recognition of the best technical staff in Southern Division for the Financial Year 2025/2026.
