Rukungiri Health Centre IV Maternity Ward Expansion Progresses Steadily
Rukungiri; Construction works under Phase II of the maternity ward project at Rukungiri Health Centre IV have reached 3.8 percent physical progress, just 17 days after the commencement of works.
This was revealed by the Rukungiri Municipal Principal Executive Engineer, Merynah Kekiijo, during the monthly site inspection meeting held at the health facility. The meeting was chaired by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Mabel Mirembe Karazarwe.
The project, which will cost UGX 513 million, commenced on June 9, 2026, and is expected to be completed by June 8, 2027. The contract was awarded to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Engineering Brigade.
The scope of work includes completing the building through walling, roofing, water drainage systems, fabrication and installation of doors and windows, external and internal finishing, joinery fittings, and mechanical and electrical installations. Works currently in progress include external rendering, internal plastering, and electrical and mechanical installations.

Speaking on behalf of the contractor, UPDF Captain Yunus Ntegeka, the Western Region MDA Project Manager, said the UPDF gives priority to local communities by reserving more than 40 percent of jobs for residents. He encouraged community members, especially casual labourers, to seek employment opportunities at the project site.

The Deputy Town Clerk, Justus Ampiire, and the Rukungiri Municipal Mayor, Boaz Kansiime Matita, urged the contractor to avoid shoddy work and strictly follow the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding. They said that once completed, Rukungiri Health Centre IV will become the only health facility in the area with fully equipped maternity services, including a special ward for premature babies, with all services offered free of charge.

The Rukungiri Municipal Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Davis Ahabwe, said the current maternity ward accommodates about 20 mothers. He noted that the new maternity ward will be able to admit more than 40 mothers after delivery, greatly improving maternal healthcare services in the municipality.
