Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi Calls for Transparency in Government Support to Private Enterprises
Ntungamo: The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has urged the government to establish a clear and comprehensive modus operandi for supporting private entities with taxpayers’ money.
Ssenyonyi made these remarks on December 11, during an oversight visit to the Africa Coffee Park in Rwashamaire, Kajara County, Ntungamo District.
Ssenyonyi noted that while the Opposition supports the idea of government aiding private enterprises, transparency and accountability are crucial since the funds come from taxpayers. He called on the proprietors of Africa Coffee Park to ensure that the funds lead to tangible value addition and benefits for the coffee industry.
Ssenyonyi also criticized past cases where large investments in private entities like Atiak Sugar Works, Lubowa Specialized Hospital, and Roko Construction failed to deliver long-term results.
Ntungamo District Woman MP, Hon. Josselyn Bata Kamateneti, commended the government’s efforts to promote the coffee value chain. She urged the government to establish more coffee hubs across the country to create jobs for youth and improve coffee prices through value addition. Kamateneti assured that Parliament would support all initiatives aimed at advancing Uganda’s coffee industry.
The Chief Exucutive Officer of Africa Coffee Park Nelson Tugume, explained that the project, which began in 2020, aims to enhance the coffee value chain through technology, research, and innovation.
Tugume revealed that the government has invested $20 million in the project and expressed hope for additional funding to further boost community economic growth. He appealed to Parliament and the Opposition for continued support.
