Kigezi Region Reports 22 Mpox Cases, Ministry of Health Urges Vigilance
Rukungiri: An epidemiologist from the Ministry of Health, Kunya Henry, has revealed that the Kigezi region has registered 22 cases of Mpox.
Kunya shared this information on January 22, during an interview with our reporter at the Rukungiri District headquarters, where a one-day workshop was held for health workers operating in the district alongside a team from the Ministry of Health.
According to Kunya, out of 22 Mpox cases, 13 are in Kabale District, 8 in Kanungu District, and 1 in Rukungiri District. He noted that most cases are reported among individuals aged 18-29 and 30-39, predominantly in urban centers.
Kunya explained that the main symptoms of Mpox include rash and fever, along with headache, fatigue, and throat pain. He warned that the virus is particularly dangerous for people with pre-existing conditions such as HIV, cancer, and hypertension, as these individuals often have weakened immunity.

The Rukungiri District Health Educator Alban Natukunda, stated that after confirming the Mpox case in the district two weeks ago, measures are being taken to contain the disease. This includes taking samples from individuals who have been in contact with the patient.
Natukunda advised the public to report suspected cases to Village Health Teams (VHTs) or nearby health facilities to prevent the disease from spreading. He emphasized the importance of observing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), such as avoiding handshakes, washing hands regularly, maintaining social distance, and wearing face masks in public spaces.
