Rukungiri: Residents of Rukungiri District are expected to benefit from improved transport and connectivity after the district approved plans to work on 20 district roads covering about 170 kilometres in the 2026/2027 financial year.

According to the approved district budget of UGX 69.1 billion for the coming financial year, UGX 1,871,049,000 has been allocated to the Roads and Engineering Department to facilitate road maintenance, bridge repairs and culvert installations across different sub-counties.

Documents from the Works Department seen by our reporter indicate that the planned works will be implemented under both Routine Mechanized Maintenance funded through the Road Maintenance Grant (RMG) and Routine Manual Maintenance funded by the Uganda Road Fund (URF).

Under Routine Mechanized Maintenance, twelve roads covering a total distance of 90.60 kilometres are scheduled for rehabilitation. These include Kikarara–Garuka–Kyabahanga Road (12.60km), Mabanga–Kahengye Road (5.30km), Nyabikuku–Rwakigaju Road (9.60km), Kabaranga–Murago–Nyakisorora Road (11.70km), Omukikunika–Rusheshe Road (4.20km), Joshua Stage–Rwenshana Primary School–Katokye Road (6.50km), Ruhinda–Rwengiri Road (9.60km), Kagashe–Ikuniro–Buhunga Road (5.50km), Kebisoni–Kabingo–Mabanga Road (6.00km), Kagashe–Rwakanyegyero Road (8.10km), St. Francis–Ikuniro Road (3.50km) and Rwenshaka–Burombe–Bwanda Road (8.00km).

Meanwhile, eight roads covering 80 kilometres will undergo Routine Manual Maintenance under the Uganda Road Fund programme. These include Kigaga–Birara Road (1.80km), Buyanja–Nyakagyeme Road (12.20km), Rukungiri–Rubabo–Nyarushanje Road (18.00km), Nyakishenyi–Marashanino–Kyabamba Road (5.60km), Kisiizi–Nyarurambi–Kamaga Road (10.40km), Kyomera–Nyabukumba–Ihindiro Road (9.70km), Bikurungu–Kakoni Road (9.60km) and Kebisoni–Mabanga–Kihanga–Ikuniro Road (16.00km).

The district has also planned four major bridge and culvert installation activities aimed at improving drainage and reducing transport disruptions during heavy rains.

Among the planned interventions is the repair and installation of additional 900mm reinforced concrete culverts at Mugina water crossing along Kabaranga–Murago–Nyakisorora Road in Nyakishenyi Sub-county.

The district will also repair three lines of 1800mm steel culverts at Kigoyi water crossing along Nyakishenyi–Marashanino–Kyabamba Road.

Other planned works include construction of end structures and additional backfill material at Buturwa water crossing along Kisiizi–Nyarurambi–Kamaga Road, as well as procurement and installation of 433 reinforced concrete culverts on various district roads, especially along the Rukungiri–Rubabo–Nyarushanje Road.

District leaders say the planned road works are expected to improve transport, ease movement of agricultural produce to markets and boost service delivery across the district.
