Few Emyooga SACCOs Hold AGMs in Rukungiri, Leaders Urged to Act

Rukungiri: Only 21 out of 52 Emyooga SACCOs in Rukungiri District have held their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for the 2025 financial year, raising concerns about the performance of SACCO leaders.

This was revealed by the Rukungiri District Emyooga SACCO Chairperson, Pastor Laban Ainembabazi, during a meeting of SACCO committee members held at the district council hall on April 14.

Pastor Ainembabazi said that only 32 SACCOs have carried out audits, while 7 have scheduled dates for their AGMs. The rest have not taken any action. He also noted that 19 SACCOs are still operating on the initial seed capital of UGX 30 million they received in 2021, indicating that they are dormant. Active SACCOs, he said, have already received additional funding of UGX 70 million and UGX 90 million from the government.

He urged SACCO leaders to organize AGMs and revive their groups so they can continue receiving support from the Microfinance Support Centre. He also called on struggling SACCOs, including Rubabo Saloon, Rujumbura Performing Artists, Rujumbura Tailors and among others to become active again.

The Rukungiri District Principal Commercial Officer, Caroline Atuheire, said that more than UGX 2.8 billion has been disbursed to Emyooga SACCOs in the district since 2021. Of this, SACCOs in Rubabo Constituency received UGX 980 million, Rujumbura Constituency UGX 920 million, and Rukungiri Municipality UGX 920 million.

She added that in the 2025/2026 financial year, Rukungiri Municipality has received UGX 360 million, Rujumbura Constituency UGX 100 million, and Rubabo Constituency UGX 80 million.

Atuheire advised SACCOs to admit new members, improve record-keeping, promote a saving culture, and revive dormant groups.

The Rukungiri District Secretary for Commercial, Tourism, and Education, Caledonia Musiimenta, urged SACCO leaders to follow up on loan defaulters and ensure that all borrowed funds are recovered.
