Health Worker on the Run Over Alleged Illegal Abortion in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a 24-year-old woman in connection with the alleged procurement of a miscarriage.

According to police, the case was registered after it was reported at 11:30 a.m. on July 26, 2026, by Julius Bafakorora, a resident of Runyamunyu II Cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub-county.

The suspect, identified as Annet Gumoshabe, 24, a resident of Nyamirama Cell in Kakindo Parish, Bugangari Sub-county, is alleged to have been approximately five months pregnant.

Police allege that the pregnancy was attributed to Danson Akampereza. According to the report, when the suspect informed him about the pregnancy, Akampereza allegedly denied responsibility for supporting it. It is further alleged that this prompted the suspect to seek the services of a health practitioner on July 26, 2026, who allegedly procured an abortion after receiving UGX 50,000.

The matter came to light after the suspect’s mother, Jane Tukamushaba, allegedly discovered that her daughter had terminated the pregnancy and informed the LC1 Chairperson of Bagahwe Trading Centre, who later reported the case to Bugangari Police Station.

Police said officers visited and examined the scene, recorded witness statements, and retrieved the foetus, which was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

The suspect was arrested and remains in police custody to assist with investigations. Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the health practitioner, who is reportedly on the run.
