Rukungiri: Rukungiri municipality authorities on Monday April 8th 2024 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) to receive 6 hectares of land where they will construct a modern lorry parking yard and cemetery.

The said land is found opposite Taso Rukungiri branch in Kagunga cell, Eastern division of Rukungiri municipality.

A team of municipal authorities led by mayor Charles Makuru had sometime back visited the Uganda Prisons Service headquarters in Kampala where they tabled their request to be given land for the construction of a cemetery and modern lorry parking yard.

The UPS promised to consider their request, leading to the signing of the memorandum of understanding on Monday.

Speaking shortly after signing the MOU, the Rukungiri municipality deputy Town clerk Prosper Tagobya said that it has for long been in the plans of Rukungiri municipality to have a parking yard for lorries and a cemetery for unclaimed bodies.

Tagobya further revealed that the newly acquired land will host Eastern division offices which are currently running their duties in the residence of the town clerk due to lack of land.

Charles Makuru, the Rukungiri municipality mayor commended Uganda Prisons Service for remembering Rukungiri Municipality and expressed confidence that the land which has been given to them will reduce congestion in town and help authorities to improve on sanitation.

Wilson Magomu, the senior commissioner and the deputy director in charge of production and engineering at UPS said that they considered Rukungiri municipality’s request urgently because of the newly constructed Rukungiri-Kanungu-lshasha road which is expected to boost business in the area.

Of the 6 hectares of land, 5 are for the modern lorry parking yard and 1 is for the cemetery. This land was formerly owned by Rukungiri municipal council who transferred it’s ownership to UPS.
