UPDF Officer Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) officer attached to Masaka, identified as Naras Kamugisha, has died in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Rukungiri District.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the accident occurred on February 20, at around 8:45 PM in Katogo Cell, Nyamayenje Eastern Division, along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo Road. The officer was crossing the road when he was struck by a speeding motorcycle traveling from Buyanja toward Rukungiri town. The unidentified rider fled the scene, leaving Kamugisha dead on the spot.

Police were alerted and responded swiftly. A team of traffic officers, led by the District Traffic Officer (DTO), visited, examined, and documented the scene. The deceased’s body was later taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Maate stated that authorities are actively searching for the rider and the motorcycle involved in the accident. He urged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the police in their investigations to ensure the culprit is brought to justice.
