Rukungiri District Bids Farewell to Outgoing Leaders as 2021–2026 Council Term Ends

Rukungiri: Rukungiri District Local Government has held a farewell function to mark the end of the 2021–2026 council term, bidding farewell to outgoing LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama and district councilors after five years in office.

The event was held on April 30, at the district headquarters in Rukungiri Municipality and brought together political leaders, technical staff, security officials, development partners, and other stakeholders involved in district development.

The outgoing council began its term on May 20, 2021, and is expected to officially hand over office next month on May 12, when the President is sworn in. During the function, leaders reflected on the journey of service and the achievements registered during their term.

In his remarks, the outgoing District LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama thanked the Rukungiri District Local Government, councilors, and all stakeholders for supporting development programs during their tenure. He also thanked God for guiding the leadership throughout the five years.

Kyomukama appreciated the support from the RDC’s office, security departments, the Chief Administrative Officer’s office, Members of Parliament, councilors, and the media for contributing to the district’s progress.

He highlighted key achievements during the term, including the implementation of government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga. He also noted improvements in education through the construction and renovation of schools, including the development of seed secondary schools at Bikurungu, Kebisoni, and Nyabushenyi, with Nangara expected to open soon.

Kyomukama further said the district registered improvements in health services, water access, and road infrastructure, adding that many roads are now motorable. He also mentioned the establishment of a branch of Kabale University in Rukungiri.

He said the outgoing council has laid a strong foundation for the incoming leadership to continue improving service delivery.

The District Chief Administrative Officer, Byekwaso Frederick, praised the outgoing council for its commitment and cooperation, saying the farewell function was a celebration of successful leadership and development achievements.

Frederick said he was proud to serve in Rukungiri and the Kigezi region, adding that teamwork between political and technical leaders helped improve service delivery in the district.

Outgoing Rukungiri Municipality Mayor Charles Makuru, who is retiring from politics as the municipality’s longest-serving mayor, also commended the good working relationship between the municipal council and district leadership.

Makuru urged incoming leaders to maintain unity and cooperation in order to continue the development legacy left behind.

The function ended with the awarding of gifts and certificates to outgoing political leaders in recognition of their service and contribution to the development of Rukungiri District.
