Residents of Buhunga Sub County Decry Lack of Electricity, Blame It for Poverty and Unemployment

Rukungiri: Residents of Kibirizi, Kabingo, Kyaruyenje, Bwanda, Kihanga, and Rusheshe parishes in Buhunga Subcounty, Rujumbura County, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns over the persistent lack of electricity in their area.

They argue that the absence of power has hindered economic development, leading to high levels of poverty, unemployment, and overall backwardness.

Speaking to our news reporter on March 31, Amon Kabagambe, a resident of Kabobo Cell, expressed frustration over the lack of electricity, which he believes has kept the area underdeveloped.

He explained that the absence of power has significantly contributed to poverty due to limited job opportunities, forcing residents to travel long distances for essential services such as welding and phone charging.

Another resident, Busisikire Keresensiyo, along with Patrick Gwamugisha, shared similar concerns, stating that they have never seen electricity in their area since birth. They criticized local leaders for prioritizing votes and politics over service delivery.

They alleged that politicians only bring electricity poles during election periods to deceive people but fail to ensure full electricity extension.

The LC1 Chairperson of Kaboko Cell in Kyaruyenje Parish, Turyahikayo David, said the lack of electricity has severely impacted their daily lives. He explained that residents must travel long distances to access essential services such as milling machines, saloons among others. He urged the responsible authorities to intervene and extend electricity to their community.

The LC3 Chairperson for Buhunga Sub County, Benon Mugisha, acknowledged that most parts of the sub county lack electricity, forcing residents to rely on lamps, candles, and, for those who can afford it, solar power. He expressed frustration, stating that despite informing local leaders about the issue multiple times, no action has been taken.
