Opposition Politician Ingrid Turinawe Donates Sanitary Pads to Boost Girls’ Education in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: An opposition candidate and founder of TIK Foundation Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe, has donated sanitary pads to pupils of Ruruku and Kakonkoma Primary Schools in Rukungiri Municipality.

The donation took place on June 5, with deliveries made at Ruruku Primary School in Mukarere, Western Division, and Kakonkoma Primary School in Rwabo Cell, Kigaga Ward, Southern Division.

Turinawe, who is contesting for the Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament seat under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party, said she began this initiative three years ago to support the girl child during menstruation. She noted that many girls miss classes out of fear and embarrassment due to lack of sanitary pads, which causes them to drop out of school.

Turinawe said in an interview that TIK Foundation started this program to ensure that girls attend school regularly, reduce school dropouts, and fight the stigma around menstruation and they also educate them on menstrual hygiene and the importance of education.

She called on the government to take responsibility and begin providing sanitary pads to schoolgirls, stating that it’s a key factor affecting girls’ school attendance.

Senior woman teacher Grace Tusingwire and Head teacher Grace Kyomuhangi of Kakonkoma Primary School, along with Eunice Atuheire, the senior woman teacher at Ruruku Primary School, appreciated Turinawe for her generous contribution. They said many parents struggle to afford sanitary pads for their children, and this initiative will help the learners focus better on their studies.
