Mudflow claims 13 year old in Kasese.

Kasese: A mudflow on Tuesday May 6, 2025 struck a house in Kibandama I cell, Kibandama parish, Kilembe sub-county, Kasese district resulting in the death of a teenage girl.

The deceased has been identified as Mary Kabugho aged 13, who was sleeping in her room at the time of the tragedy.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident stating, that mudslide swept the house at around 11:00 PM when the deceased was in the room, separate from two brothers who survived.

SP Tumushime attributed the mudslide to heavy rains and floods that usually wreak havoc in Kasese district.

He said mountainous areas are prone to treacherous flooding with accompanying mudslides.

Tumushime called on residents in such places to vacate them and seek shelter from safer areas.

This is not the first time, mudslides are claiming lives in Kasese district.

On 7th September, 2022, 16 people including children lost their lives at Kasika Trading Centre in a landslide.
