Ministry of Lands Holds Open-Air Baraza in Rukungiri to Address Land Title Challenges
Rukungiri: The Ministry of Lands and Urban Development on February 25, held an open-air Baraza in Rukungiri District to create public awareness on the process of acquiring land titles and provide residents with a platform to share challenges they face in obtaining them.
The event took place at the Ministry Zonal Offices in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Obbo Dennes, acknowledged that limited public sensitization has contributed to the difficulties in acquiring land titles.
He noted that the country continues to experience land wrangles due to many landowners lacking proper documentation. To address this, the Ministry plans to extend such meetings to sub-counties and divisions to encourage land title acquisition and safeguard ownership.

Representing Rukungiri District Chairperson Kyomukama Geoffrey, Micheal Byarugaba, the councilor for Western Division and Secretary for Production, pointed out that corruption in land offices at the sub-county and district levels has made it difficult for people to acquire land titles. He urged the Ministry to simplify the process and called on residents to work closely with security officials to curb corruption in the sector.
The Principal Lands Officer and head of the Ministry of Lands Zonal Offices in Rukungiri Francis Mairu, expressed gratitude to the government for bringing these services closer to the people. He noted that previously, residents had to travel to the Ministry’s headquarters in Entebbe for land title processing.
Mairu encouraged Ugandans to obtain land titles, emphasizing that they provide security for landowners and help prevent land grabbing.
