Man Arrested with Stolen Pig in Buyanja Sub-county

Rukungiri: Residents of Rwenkurijo Cell in Buyanja Sub-county were left shocked last night Sunday May 3, after a man was caught transporting a suspected stolen pig along Kihunga Road, allegedly on his way to sell it in Rukungiri Town.

The suspect was identified as Justus Akankwasa, a resident of Butinde Village in Kebisoni Sub-county. According to eyewitnesses, he was intercepted at around 4:00 AM while moving with a large and restless pig. Suspicious residents raised an alarm and stopped him, demanding an explanation about the animal.

Witnesses, who preferred to remain anonymous, said Akankwasa failed to clearly explain where the pig had come from. Angry residents detained him and informed the Rwenkurijo Cell LC1 Chairperson.

Akankwasa was later released with a warning not to repeat the offence.

Speaking in an interview, Buyanja Sub-county LC3 Chairperson Emmy Rubondo Agaba criticized the way the matter was handled. He said residents made a mistake by not handing the suspect over to police, noting that imprisonment would help reduce theft in the area.

Rubondo added that some parents protect children involved in theft by paying fines on their behalf, which encourages repeated cases of stealing.

He urged residents to always report suspects to police so as to help fight theft in their communities.
