Leonard Muhunguzi Sworn In as Kebisoni Town Council Mayor, Calls for Unity and Development
Rukungiri: The newly elected Mayor of Kebisoni Town Council, Leonard Muhunguzi, has officially been sworn into office, marking the beginning of a new leadership term and the constitution of the new town council.
The swearing-in ceremony was held on May 21, at the Kebisoni Town Council Hall in Rukungiri District. Muhunguzi took the oath of office and oath of allegiance before residents, district officials, and invited guests.
The ceremony was presided over by the Rukungiri District Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Hillary Agaba.
Muhunguzi begins his first term as Mayor. He previously served as the Rukungiri District Councillor representing Kebisoni Town Council from 2016 to 2021 before losing his seat in the 2021–2026 term.
Following his inauguration, all 15 newly elected town council councillors took their oaths of office and allegiance, pledging to serve the people of Kebisoni faithfully and uphold the laws of Uganda.
After taking the oath, Muhunguzi was officially handed the instruments of power, including office stamps, keys to council property, and a motorcycle, among other official items to facilitate his duties as Mayor.
The Deputy CAO, Hillary Agaba, also presided over the election of the Speaker from the 15 sworn-in councillors. Sam Karuru, the councillor for Southern Ward, was nominated and elected unopposed as Speaker. He will serve his second term as Speaker. Ivan Nayebare, who represents Northern Ward, was also elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker.
Mayor Muhunguzi later nominated members of his Executive Committee. These include Faziira Agaba, the Youth Councillor, as Deputy Mayor, Moses Kasana as Secretary for Finance, Judith Kamusiima as Secretary for Production, and Winnie Kabasharira as Secretary for Social Services. All the nominees were approved by the council.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mayor Muhunguzi said that the political season was now over and called on residents and leaders to focus on development. He pledged to transform Kebisoni Town Council into a model local government and appealed to district authorities to support his plan of establishing a demonstration coffee garden at the town council headquarters. He also proposed supplying coffee seedlings to Rukungiri District and other local governments instead of relying on seedlings from Kiruhura District.
Muhunguzi urged all elected leaders, especially councillors, to embrace unity, cooperation, and teamwork in order to improve service delivery and promote development in Kebisoni Town Council. He further called on leaders to serve with integrity and put the interests of the people above personal differences.
