Kibunda Residents face Water Crisis, yearn for gov’t help.

Rukungiri: Residents of Kibunda Cell, Nyakina Parish in Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have expressed deep concern over the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water.

Locals including Night Twinamasiko, Abel Turyatemba and Safura Kamugisha on Tuesday April 22, 2025 told Country Radio reporter that the daily struggle to fetch water has taken a toll on their health, causing chest and back pain due to the long distances they walk while carrying heavy water containers.

Another resident, Manex Akankiza, said the community currently depends on water dams, which are often contaminated.

This has led to a rise in waterborne diseases, prompting urgent calls for improved water sources.

He added that the Kahengye water project, which was meant to solve the water shortage, has failed to meet the community’s expectations.

The LC1 Chairperson of Kibunda Cell Moses Kabangira, explained that the entire cell has only one water tap.

As a result, women and children are forced to walk long distances in search of water due to the serious water scarcity.

In response, LC3 Chairperson for Buyanja Sub-county, Emmy Rubondo, blamed the water crisis in Nyakina Parish on the government’s failure to release funds for the construction of boreholes and additional taps.

He called on the government to urgently intervene and provide a sustainable solution to the ongoing water crisis.
