Katwekamwe Residents Decry Lack of Electricity, Blame Politicians for Empty Promises
Rukungiri: Residents of Katwekamwe Cell in Rwentondo Ward, Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality have raised concern over the continued absence of electricity in their area, saying it has hindered development and service delivery.
In an interview with our news reporter on April 29, Community members expressed frustration, noting that despite repeated promises by politicians during election periods, no electricity infrastructure has been established. They accused leaders of focusing more on politics and votes than addressing critical needs such as power access.
According to local leaders, the lack of electricity has discouraged entrepreneurship and pushed away potential businesses. Many residents who had planned to start salons, welding, or other small enterprises have been forced to relocate to other areas with electricity.
The LC2 Chairperson of Rwentondo Ward, Vincent Byabagambi, said several villages in the parish were left out of the rural electrification program, causing widespread disappointment. He appealed to the responsible authorities to intervene and ensure that the affected communities are connected to the power grid.

The LC3 Chairperson for Eastern Division, David Tumwesigye, also acknowledged that the absence of electricity is affecting economic growth in the area. He said that businesses which depend on power such as salons, welding, popcorn production, and bars cannot operate effectively, resulting in lost income and limited employment opportunities.
Tumwesigye called on residents to remain calm as they await intervention from the relevant authorities.
