
Fire Destroys Property Worth Millions in Omukagana Trading Centre, Rukungiri
Rukungiri: A fire outbreak caused by an electric short circuit has destroyed property worth millions of shillings in Omukagana Trading Centre, Katungu Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub-county in Rukungiri District.
According to the Vice Chairperson of Omukagana Trading Centre and one of the eyewitnesses Musasizi Benon, the fire broke out around on May 7, at 7:00 PM. It engulfed a commercial house belonging to Umaru Salambongo Karuuna, which housed a salon and a retail shop owned by Gilbert Marshall.
Musasizi said he quickly contacted the GISO for Buyanja Sub-county, Isaac Butwire, who then alerted the Fire Brigade at Rukungiri Central Police Station.
He commended the residents of Omukagana for their swift action in trying to put out the fire and rescue some property, and also thanked the Fire Brigade for their timely response.
The Commander of Buyanja Police Station ASP Bernard Muzeeyi, urged residents to always report such incidents immediately to the nearest police station so that help can arrive before damage escalates.
He also cautioned the public to be vigilant when using electrical appliances and to always switch them off when not in use to avoid electrical accidents.
