Counsel Isaac Rallies Traders and Residents to Embrace Cleanliness During Rukungiri Town Cleanup Drive

Rukungiri: The aspiring Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, Counsel Isaac Atukunda, has called on the public, especially traders, to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness around their business premises in a bid to keep Rukungiri town clean.

Atukunda made these remarks on May 2, while presiding as the Guest of Honor at a town-wide cleaning exercise organized by Rukungiri Municipality Youth SACCO (RMYS). The exercise saw participants clean all major streets of Rukungiri town. The launch of the activity began in the morning at the Rukungiri Municipal Offices and concluded at Rukungiri Inn.

He also urged the municipal authorities to enforce stricter measures on travelers who pass through the town and irresponsibly dump waste, often contributing to garbage accumulation on the streets.

The aspiring legislator added that it would be shameful for visitors to find Rukungiri in a filthy state. He encouraged residents to take charge by properly managing their waste and also called for tree planting to beautify the town. He further appealed to the public to support his parliamentary bid, promising to work hand in hand with them to develop Rukungiri Municipality.

The SACCO Chairperson and Councilor for Kagashe Ward, Innocent Muhwezi, revealed that RMYS began with a capital of UGX 5 million donated by Counsel Atukunda and has since grown to UGX 11 million. Muhwezi condemned the behavior of some traders and pedestrians who irresponsibly litter the streets, urging them to use designated garbage collection points instead.

The SACCO Secretary Eunice Ninsiima, warned that improper waste disposal poses serious health risks to town residents and users. She noted that during the cleaning exercise, streets were littered with polythene bags, plastic bottles, and other waste that could potentially cause diseases like malaria. She emphasized the need for traders to take initiative in keeping their surroundings clean.
