Bishop Asiimwe Suspends Diocesan Conferences, Directs Churches to Strengthen Ebola Prevention Measures
Rukungiri: The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has suspended all diocesan conferences and days of prayer as part of measures to prevent the spread of Ebola.
Speaking to our news reporter at Riverside Hotel in Rukungiri District, Bishop Asiimwe said he had suspended a conference that was scheduled to take place last weekend at Nyakina Church of Uganda. He also suspended the quarterly conference that was due to be held in June 2026 at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, the headquarters of the diocese.
The bishop explained that the quarterly conference, which is held four times every year, attracts Christians from different districts across the country. He noted that large gatherings could increase the risk of spreading the Ebola virus.
Bishop Asiimwe also directed all churches within the diocese to install handwashing facilities and ensure that worshippers wash their hands before entering church. He further urged church leaders to maintain proper seating arrangements and observe all standard operating procedures (SOPs) aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.
He added that on Martyrs Day, all churches within the diocese will conduct services in their respective parishes instead of gathering at one central venue, as a way of protecting Christians from possible infection.
