10-Year-Old Primary School Pupil Hangs Himself on Coffee Tree in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri District are investigating a suspected suicide incident involving a 10-year-old boy.

The deceased has been identified as  Benedicto Gumisiriza, a pupil at Mutariga Primary School and a resident of Nyamubogore Cell, Nyeibingo Parish, Kebisoni Sub-county in Rukungiri District.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the incident happened on 8th May 2026 at around 9:00pm.

It is alleged that at about 2:00pm, the boy locked the door of his room from inside and left through the window to an unknown place. Later in the evening at around 7:30pm, he returned home and his mother, Evelyn Kentaro, asked him where he had been. Instead of responding, he reportedly ran away again to an unknown place.

At around 9:00pm, his elder sister, Ruth Nduhukire, discovered him hanging on a coffee tree with a banana fiber tied around his neck. She immediately informed their mother, who later reported the matter to police.

The scene of crime was visited by the Rukungiri District Police Commander and a team of officers. Statements were recorded from witnesses, and the body was handed over to relatives for burial.

Police said investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
