Western Division Passes Shs 628 Million Budget for 2026/2027 Financial Year

Rukungiri: Western Division in Rukungiri Municipality has officially passed a budget of Shs 628,020,874 for the 2026/2027 financial year.

The budget was approved during a council meeting held at Town View Hotel in Western Division on April 22, 2026.

While presenting the budget, the LCIII Chairperson of Western Division, Sylvia Twinomugisha Katimbira, outlined the expected sources of revenue and planned expenditures. She noted that the total budget will come from both local revenue and government grants. Out of the total amount, Shs 541,460,987 (86%) is expected from local revenue, while Shs 86,559,887 (14%) will come from government transfers.

Twinomugisha said the 2026/2027 budget will focus on key development priorities. These include fencing Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools within the division, supplying twin desks to schools such as Kinyasano Boarding Primary School, Kahororo Primary School, and Kiyaga Primary School, renovating the staff house at Karangaro Health Centre II, and repairing a water spring in each ward, among other projects.

The Town Clerk of Western Division, John Kwesiga, thanked outgoing council members for their commitment to the growth and development of the area. He also emphasized the need for teamwork among stakeholders to achieve the budget targets.

Kwesiga highlighted several measures to improve budget performance, including commitment from all stakeholders, addressing challenges that affect revenue collection, and strengthening supervision and monitoring of projects. He stressed the importance of cooperation between leaders and technical staff.

The meeting was also attended by the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, His Worship Charles Makuru, who congratulated the council for completing the 2025/2026 financial year and successfully passing the new budget.

Makuru urged councillors to follow proper procedures when proposing and approving projects. He explained that all plans should start at the division level before being approved by the municipal council to ensure better service delivery.

Commenting on the ongoing government program to organize urban centers, Makuru called on councillors to work closely with the municipal council. He encouraged them to continue educating residents about the program, which was introduced to improve order and development in urban areas.

He also advised business operators to follow the set guidelines and move to designated areas to promote peace and organized development within the municipality.
