Rukungiri High Court Adjourns Tumukunde Election Petition to Tomorrow
Rukungiri: The High Court in Rukungiri has adjourned the hearing of an election petition challenging the election of Gen. Henry Tumukunde as the Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality to tomorrow October 7, at 9:00am.
Justice Richard Wejuli Wabwire adjourned the case after hearing preliminary objections raised by the parties in the petition filed by Ingrid Kamateneti of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
The court is expected to continue hearing the preliminary objections at 9:00am before proceeding to hear witnesses at 10:00am.
Kamateneti is challenging the election of Gen. Tumukunde and is asking court to nullify his election, arguing that the results declared by the Electoral Commission did not reflect a valid election.
She has also challenged the role and decision of the Electoral Commission in declaring Gen. Tumukunde the winner of the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary election.
During today’s session, lawyers representing the different parties presented their preliminary objections, focusing mainly on legal and procedural issues surrounding the petition.

The Electoral Commission is also a respondent in the case because of its decision to declare Gen. Tumukunde the winner of the election.
The preliminary stage is important because the court’s decision on the objections could determine whether the petition proceeds to the hearing of evidence and examination of the allegations raised by the petitioner.
According to the court schedule, the hearing is expected to run for three days, with witnesses expected to begin appearing after the preliminary objections are handled.
