Kebisoni Community Gets New Protected Water Spring
Rukungiri: The Mayor of Kebisoni Town Council, Leonard Muhungunzi, together with Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries, has commissioned a newly constructed protected water spring for residents of Kakinga Cell, Central Ward, Kebisoni Town Council in Rukungiri District.
The community had been facing a shortage of clean and safe water, forcing residents to share water sources with animals.
The Kakinga Protected Water Spring was lobbied for by Mayor Leonard Muhungunzi and donated by North London Singers in England through Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries, a local NGO supporting communities through education and health programs.
The water source was commissioned on September 30, in Kakinga Cell, Central Ward, Kebisoni Town Council.
Speaking during the commissioning, Mayor Muhungunzi said residents had been lacking access to clean water and were forced to collect water from dams shared with animals.
He thanked Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries for supporting the community and called upon residents to take responsibility for protecting and maintaining the water source.
Muhungunzi also offered land for the construction of the protected spring.

The Director of Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries, based in Kebisoni Town Council, Abasa Benjamin, said Mayor Muhungunzi approached their organisation and lobbied for the construction of the water source.
Benjamin said the organisation invested a lot of money in the project and urged residents to protect it.
He also asked the community to use clean containers, such as jerrycans, when fetching water to ensure that the water remains safe for drinking.
Benjamin said Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries has so far constructed 48 protected water springs across Rukungiri District.
He added that the organisation also supports orphans, vulnerable children and widows through school fees, construction of latrines and shelters, among other initiatives.

The Senior Assistant Town Clerk of Kebisoni Town Council, Norman Agaba, said the local government often has many unfunded priorities, making it difficult to finance some community projects.
Agaba thanked Mayor Muhungunzi for lobbying for the water project and Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministries for supporting the community.

The Kebisoni Town Council District Councillor, Katungi Edward Muhwezi, said residents had been walking long distances in search of clean and safe water.
He said some residents were forced to use water from sources where motorcycles and vehicles were washed, exposing the community to water contaminated with oil and other substances.
Meanwhile, Sanyu Scovia, a teacher at Kebisoni Junior School, urged residents to clean their water containers before fetching water.
