Rukungiri Begins Distribution of 229,500 Mosquito Nets to Households

Rukungiri: Rukungiri District on October 26, 2026, began distributing 229,500 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to households across the district and Rukungiri Municipality in a renewed effort to fight malaria.

The two-day exercise, which concludes tomorrow, October 27, follows a directive from the Ministry of Health and aims to ensure that residents have access to mosquito nets for protection against malaria.

The distribution exercise was launched at the Eastern Division headquarters in Rukungiri, where Village Health Team (VHT) members received bales of mosquito nets for delivery to households in their respective communities.

The consignment consists of 4,590 bales, each containing 50 mosquito nets, intended for distribution across 105 parishes in Rukungiri District and Rukungiri Municipality. The number of nets allocated to each parish is based on its population.

The distribution comes three months after the mosquito nets were officially flagged off on July 22, 2026.

Before the exercise began, VHT members underwent training last Tuesday to prepare them for the distribution process and ensure that the nets reach the intended beneficiaries.

Speaking during the exercise, Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner Bron Kikanshemeza urged residents to use the mosquito nets properly, warning against misuse that could undermine efforts to prevent malaria.

The District Health Officer, Dr. Akasiima Mucunguzi, also urged residents to sleep under the mosquito nets every night to protect themselves against malaria.

Dr. Mucunguzi said the distribution programme is aimed at improving protection against the disease at household level. He added that the district would continue working to ensure residents benefit from the programme.

Meanwhile, Eastern Division Chairperson Gashom Twesigye appealed to residents to use the mosquito nets correctly to prevent malaria as they wait for other government programmes.
