Rwabugumi Lobbies 5 Tonnes of Maize and Soybean Seeds for Rubabo Farmers

Rukungiri: Rubabo County Member of Parliament Mathias Mwesigwa Rwabugumi has lobbied for five tonnes of maize and soybean seeds from the Uganda Prisons Service to support farmers and boost food production in Rubabo County, Rukungiri District.

The seeds were officially launched for distribution on September 25, at Buyanja Town Council headquarters in Rukungiri District.

Rwabugumi said he wrote to the Uganda Prisons Service requesting the seeds to support farmers in Rubabo County as part of efforts to fight poverty and improve household food security.

He urged residents to use the seeds productively to produce food and income, saying people should take the lead in fighting poverty before looking to government for support.

Rwabugumi said the initiative is in line with President Museveni’s call for households to produce enough food for consumption and income.

He also urged local leaders in Buyanja Sub-county to work together to improve service delivery and teach farmers proper methods of growing maize and soybeans, including the use of manure.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Rukungiri, Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom, who launched the distribution, urged residents to stop cutting down forests and encroaching on wetlands, saying these activities have affected rainfall patterns.

Ongom also called on local leaders to lead by example by using the seeds for development.

The LC3 Chairperson of Buyanja Sub-county, Emmy Agaba Rubondo, welcomed the seeds and thanked Rwabugumi for lobbying for the support.

Rubondo said the seeds had come at the right time because some farmers had planted during the previous season, but their seeds dried up.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the seeds as capital for production rather than eating them.
