
Youth suffer depression than adults-Medics reveal.
Rukungiri: As Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate International day of fight against depression on Monday January 13, 2024, Dr. Nastorio Natukwasa, a psychiatrist at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale has urged people to avoid depression as it is the major cause of death.
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious mental disorder that negatively affects how you feel, think, act, and perceive the world.
In an interview with our reporter, Dr. Natukwasa revealed that depression is usually caused by Death of loved ones, diseases, problems and family background.
The psychiatrist said 8 in 10 people always possess the signs and symptoms of depression and women are more affected than men.
He however said the youth are the most affected.
Karoli Lwanga Hospital superintendent Dr. Lema Felix Adriko appealed to victims of depression to open up and speak to someone, mostly counsellors in case they are unable to handle.
He said people suffering from depression should desist from drug abuse as a source of their solace.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 300 million people have depression and it is the fourth leading cause of death among people aged 15 – 29.
