UGX 27 Million Kagogo Slaughter Slab Commissioned in Rukungiri, DRDC Warns Against Uninspected Meat

Rukungiri: Authorities in Rukungiri Municipality have commissioned the first phase of the upgraded Kagogo slaughter slab in Western Division, following a UGX 27 million investment aimed at improving meat hygiene standards and enhancing local revenue collection.

The commissioning ceremony, held on June 20, was officiated by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom, who used the occasion to issue a stern warning to butchers dealing in uninspected meat. He emphasized the urgent need for compliance with veterinary and public health regulations to safeguard consumers.

“This facility represents progress, but our work is not complete if butchers continue to sell unstamped and contaminated meat. My office is working hand-in-hand with veterinary officers to arrest and prosecute anyone violating meat safety laws,” Ongom said.

The DRDC applauded the Western Division leadership for what he described as transparent and effective use of public funds, noting that the upgraded facility will contribute significantly to public health and economic growth in the area.

His Worship Charles Makuru, the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, welcomed the development and encouraged relevant departments to ensure the remaining phases of the project are fully implemented. He noted that a modern slaughterhouse would not only improve hygiene but also increase revenue collection for the Municipality.

Ngabi Traders Limited, the contractors overseeing the upgrade, assured stakeholders that the construction was carried out in strict adherence to the approved Bills of Quantities (BOQs), with supervision and verification from relevant technical officers.

Western Division LC3 Chairperson, Sylivia Twinomugisha Katimbira, hailed the project as a transformative step for the meat industry in Rukungiri. She added that, beyond improved meat quality, the facility would generate manure for local farmers, creating additional economic benefits for the community.
