Solar Water Project Commissioned in Rukungiri to Boost Clean Water Access

Rukungiri: The district of Rukungiri District, through the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Broni Kikanshemeza, has commissioned the Izinga Solar Water Supply System project worth UGX 1,000,200,000. The project will supply 45,000 litres of water per hour.

The commissioning ceremony was held on March 31, at the water source station located at Karama Market in Izinga II Cell, Bunono Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-County.

The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Water and Environment, awarded the contract to Nexus Green Limited in September 2025. The project was scheduled to run for eight months at a cost of UGX 1,000,200,000.

According to the Clerk of Works, Imeridah Nakalema, the company was tasked with installing a solar energy system, constructing a pump house with two rooms (one for the pump and another for a security guard), building an eco-san toilet, walkways, a chain-link fence, and an 8-cubic-metre water tank, among other works.

The Senior Engineer from the Ministry of Water and Environment, Eng. Nicholas Tugume, said the project will supply water to 23 villages across three parishes in Nyarushanje Sub-County.

While commissioning the project, RDC Kikanshemeza urged residents to protect and properly use the water source so it can benefit communities for many years. He also thanked the government for extending clean water services to rural areas.

The Rukungiri Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Hillary Agaba, and Michael Byarugaba, who represented the LC5 Chairperson, encouraged residents who cannot afford private water connections to apply as a community through the South Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation. This body will help extend water services and install public taps managed by responsible individuals.

The event was attended by local leaders, district officials, representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment, and members of the community.
