Rev. Fr. Balthazar Ndyomugabe Defends Catholic Faith Against Idol Worship Accusations

Rukungiri: The Chaplain of Nyakibaale Hospital and Patron of the Peace and Justice Movement in Kabale Diocese Rev. Fr. Balthazar Ndyomugabe has dismissed claims that Catholics worship idols, stating that they only worship the Lord God, in accordance with the first commandment.

Rev Fr Ndyomugabe revealed this on March 2, during an interview with our news reporter at St. Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, where the school commissioned a newly constructed administration block, unveiled a statue of Saint Jerome, and inaugurated a shrine for the Holy Virgin Mary, featuring a statue imported from Italy. The ceremony took place at the school premises in Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District, with Rev. Fr. Balthazar Ndyomugabe as the main celebrant.

Fr. Ndyomugabe clarified that Catholics do not worship statues but rather honor them as symbols of faith and devotion. He emphasized that images of saints, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Virgin Mary serve as reminders of their beliefs, hopes, and faith. He urged critics to respect Catholic traditions, just as Catholics respect people of other faiths.

He said that as Catholic leaders, they have studied theology for years and understand their faith. No one should try to lecture them on how to practice their religion because every faith has its own constitution, and people should follow their own instead of attacking others.

Fr. Ndyomugabe further stated that he could also criticize other religions but chooses not to, as Catholics believe in unity and peaceful coexistence. He encouraged all religious leaders to preach God’s word with respect and harmony, rather than seeking followers by condemning other faiths.

Meanwhile, the headteacher of St. Jerome Secondary School, Alfunce Byamukama, expressed gratitude to God for enabling them to complete these projects. He also appreciated the PTA and board members for their vision in constructing the new administration block. Additionally, he thanked the 2023/24 prefectorial body for initiating the construction of the Holy Mother Mary shrine.
