Residents of Kitojo Parish Demand Extension of National ID Renewal to Village Level
Rukungiri: Residents of Kitojo Parish in Buyanja Subcounty, Rukungiri District, are demanding that the ongoing National Identification Card renewal exercise be extended to lower levels such as villages and parishes.
With only one week left before the six-month renewal period ends, residents especially the elderly and the needy say they are facing challenges traveling long distances to the subcounty headquarters. Many complain of congestion at registration centers, caused by the limited number of computers available.
According to Denis Karabareme, a resident of Rugarama Cell in Kitojo Parish, many people have not yet renewed their IDs because of the long distance to the subcounty and high transport costs. He said the situation is worse for elderly and vulnerable residents who cannot afford transport or stand in long queues.
He appealed to the government to extend the renewal deadline and take the services closer to the people at parish or village level for easier accessibility.

Responding to concerns about the ongoing NIRA registration exercise, the Electoral Commission Officer for Buyanja Subcounty, Sulaiti Amanya said only one week remains before the renewal exercise ends. After that, the process will move to the district level for the issuance of new National Identification Cards.
He acknowledged that the limited number of computers has slowed their work but said they are doing their best to serve everyone within the available time.
