Panic as Lightning Strikes Classrooms in Kisoro, 14 Students Admitted
Kisoro: Fourteen students from St. Paul’s Rugarambiro Secondary School in Nyundo Sub-county, Kisoro District, have been admitted to Kisoro Hospital after being struck by lightning.
The incident happened on October 2, at around 2:30 PM during heavy rainfall when lightning struck the Senior One and Senior Two classrooms, causing panic as students ran for safety.
School headteacher Obiyari Emmanuel told journalists at Kisoro Hospital that 14 students were rescued, with six in critical condition. He said the names of the affected students will not be released for now. Teachers are still verifying whether more students were affected.
Emmanuel explained that most of the critically injured students were not wearing rubber shoes at the time. He appealed to parents to buy rubber footwear for their children, especially during the rainy season, to reduce the risk of lightning injuries. He also advised students to avoid wearing open shoes at school.
All the injured students are currently receiving treatment in the emergency ward at Kisoro Hospital.
