Museveni calls for calculative farming to avert escalating poverty in Kigezi
Rukungiri: The president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has asked the people of Kigezi sub region to adopt farming with calculation if they are to get out of poverty.
The president made the call on Thursday, Febuary 13, 2025 while addressing Kigezi leaders at Rukungiri main stadium.
Museveni is in Kigezi sub-region for a three-day tour focusing on assessing the impact of the Parish Development Model (PDM) and encouraging wealth creation among rural farmers.
The president’s call came after leaders in Kigezi revealed that poverty in this sub region is increasing at a scaring rate.
A memorandum read by the Minister of Security retired Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu on behalf of his fellow leaders revealed that poverty in Kigezi sub-region increased from 13.3 percent in 2016 to 27.3 percent in 2020.
Leaders attribute the increasing poverty to land fragmentation and low soil productivity levels.
