Midwives in Rukungiri Encouraged to Train Women in Self-Administered Family Planning Injections

Rukungiri: Midwives in Rukungiri District have been encouraged to train women on how to self-administer contraceptive injections, known as subcutaneous injections, as a family planning method.

This call was made on March 27, by Bamwesigye Ezera, who works closely with the Ministry of Health in Uganda to support efforts in sexual reproductive health, maternal, and child health. Bamwesigye made the remarks while training midwives at the Rukungiri District headquarters.

He emphasized the importance of empowering women to self-inject at home, ensuring better access to family planning services. According to Bamwesigye, injectable contraceptives are highly effective in preventing unintended pregnancies, improving mental health outcomes, and enabling women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Bamwesigye urged midwives to ensure that women fully understand the self-injection process so they can be given extra doses to last a year. This approach will help women receive their contraceptive methods on time, avoiding challenges such as long distances to health facilities, shortages of health workers, and stock outs of commodities.

He also highlighted the critical role midwives play in providing comprehensive reproductive health services, including family planning education and counseling.
