Frank Rukanirwa Steps Aside for Minister Jim Muhwezi in Rujumbura
Rukungiri: Security Minister and Rujumbura County MP, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi, has reconciled with his key opponent in the recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, Frank Arinaitwe.
The two met before NRM First Vice Chairman Alhajji Moses Kigongo, who facilitated the reconciliation process.
During the meeting, Kigongo announced that Arinaitwe had agreed not to contest as an independent candidate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections and would instead back Maj Gen Muhwezi. He stressed that the decision was voluntary and intended to strengthen the NRM and promote party unity.
The NRM primaries in Rujumbura were highly competitive, with Maj Gen Muhwezi garnering 21,631 votes against Arinaitwe’s 17,083 votes. Dissatisfied with the outcome, Arinaitwe had initially vowed to run as an independent in the general elections.
Maj Gen Muhwezi welcomed the gesture, thanking Arinaitwe for his support and noting that their unity would enhance the party’s chances of retaining the constituency seat.
“If I win the forthcoming elections, this will be my last term, and I will support Arinaitwe should he contest in 2031,” Muhwezi pledged.
On his part, Arinaitwe explained that his decision to step aside followed consultations with the office of the NRM chairman, saying he was committed to party cohesion.
The reconciliation is seen as a major boost for NRM in Rujumbura County ahead of the 2026 general elections.
