Farmers Urged to Be Cautious with Livestock and Poultry Drugs

Rukungiri: Livestock and poultry farmers in Rukungiri District have been urged to be cautious with the drug doses and expiry dates of medicines they give to their animals and birds if they are to succeed in their projects.

This call was made on September 18, during a seminar organized by Conversion Feeds Limited, the distributors of Intraco Feeds in Uganda, at Riverside Hotel in Rukungiri Municipality.

According to Ssemogerere Katende, Chief of Operations for Conversion Feeds Limited, the workshop was aimed at training farmers on better management and feeding practices for poultry, cattle, and pigs to increase productivity and profitability. He encouraged farmers to treat agriculture as a business.

Ssemogerere also urged the youth to embrace farming as a source of income, saying many farmers struggle because of a lack of knowledge on how to farm profitably.

The veterinary practitioner with Conversion and Intraco Feeds Uganda Limited Elisha Ssetimba, advised farmers to always seek guidance from professionals during vaccination campaigns and ensure they buy the right drugs from the right sources. He warned that expired or counterfeit drugs, as well as over- or under-dosing, can harm livestock and reduce productivity.

Some farmers who attended shared their challenges. Simon Kavere, a poultry and piggery farmer from Kitojo Central, Bugyera Parish in Buyanja Sub-county, said he faces high costs of feeds, livestock diseases, and a lack of quality semen for hybrid pig insemination.

Kenneth Byaruhanga, a distributor of animal and poultry feeds in Rukungiri town, advised farmers to always select quality hybrids if they want to succeed in their projects.
