Eat Less Fat, Exercise More – Rukungiri Health Educator Advises on Diabetes Prevention
Rukungiri: Citizens in Rukungiri District have been advised to reduce the risk of diabetes by eating less fatty foods and engaging in regular physical exercise.
The call was made on August 5, by Rukungiri District Health Educator, Alban Natukunda, during an interview with our news reporter from his office in Kakabada Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri District.
Natukunda noted that diabetes affects many people, including some who are unaware they have the disease, while others who are diagnosed do not know how to manage it, a situation that often results in death. He explained that people aged 35 years and above, as well as younger individuals who are overweight are at a higher risk of developing diabetes.
Natukunda identified several factors that may lead to diabetes, including being overweight, accumulation of fat around the belly, pregnancy, excessive thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, family history of the disease, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. He added that in some cases, the pancreas fails to produce insulin, which can also result in diabetes.
Natukunda further warned that diabetes can lead to severe health complications such as retinopathy, kidney failure, and skin diseases.
He urged diabetic patients to go for regular medical check-ups to monitor their condition and advised the public to eat plenty of greens and fruits, drink enough water, and seek professional medical guidance as preventive measures.
