Caregiver Assaults Midwife After Wife Delivers Stillbirth at Bugangari HCIV

Rukungiri: A midwife at Bugangari Health Centre IV in Rukungiri District was on Thursday morning beaten by a caregiver whose wife had just undergone surgery and delivered a dead baby.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2025 at around 9:40am within the health facility premises in Bugangari Sub-county, Rujumbura Constituency.

The assaulted midwife has been identified as Caroline Nshemerirwe, a staff member at the facility, while the suspect is only identified as Ivan, a resident of Kashayu Cell, Kashayu Parish in Bugangari Sub-county.

According to sources at the facility, shortly after the operation, Nshemerirwe returned to the theatre to pick up her phone which she had forgotten. She reportedly decided to transfer the woman who had been operated on, back to the ward. When another health worker requested Ivan to assist the midwife with the stretcher, he turned violent and started beating her.

Nshemerirwe was rescued by other people who had come to the facility seeking medical services.

Speaking to our news reporter on November 24, the midwife said she doesn’t know why Ivan attacked her, but suspects the assault may be linked to the grief following the discovery of a dead baby during the surgery.

The Secretary for mobilization at the Uganda Nurses and Mid-wives Union who also doubles as the General Secretary for All Nurses and Midwives for Rukungiri district, Alex Twekwase, confirmed the incident, saying it had been reported to police and to the office of the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner. Medical examinations were also conducted.

At the RDC’s office, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom condemned the attack, warning members of the public against acts of violence in government health facilities.

He assured that security agencies have commenced investigations and that the perpetrator will be handled according to the law.

It is alleged that Ivan was released on police bond the same day, as inquiries into the matter continue.
