Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe Urges Christians to Plant Coffee as a Path Out of Poverty
Rukungiri: The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Right Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has called on Christians in Rukungiri District and across the country to embrace coffee farming as a way to fight poverty and develop their families and communities.
Speaking at a press conference held on April 16, at the Diocesan Headquarters at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, Bishop Asiimwe revealed that churches and individuals who took up his earlier call to plant coffee are now approaching their harvesting season.
He encouraged more people to join the initiative, saying Rukungiri District has vast idle land that can be put to productive use. He noted that while many complain about poverty, they are not utilizing the resources around them. The Bishop emphasized that coffee farming can be a lucrative venture, pointing out that a kilogram of coffee currently sells for UGX 18,000, and those who plant in large quantities can harvest several tons.
