Rukungiri Municipal Council Approves Four-Night Study Tour to Lira City
Rukungiri: Rukungiri Municipal Council has approved a four-night study tour to Lira City scheduled for January 2027.
The study tour is expected to take place between January 15 and 30, 2027, although the exact dates are yet to be confirmed.
The proposal was approved during the third council meeting of the 2026/2027 financial year held at Rukungiri Municipal Council Hall.
During the meeting on November 5, several councillors supported the motion, led by Karangaro Ward Councillor Enock Karuhura, Kinyasano Ward Councillor Innocence Rubarondesa, Male Elderly Councillor Frank Begumisa and Northern Ward Councillor Fred Besigye, among others.
However, an alternative proposal by some councillors to conduct the study tour in Mbale was not approved.
Rukungiri Municipal Town Clerk Isaiah Tumwesigye had earlier guided councillors to consider visiting nearby districts in Rwanda to gain knowledge and experience in urban beautification and development. However, councillors settled on Lira City.
Speaking to our reporter after the council meeting, Rukungiri Municipal Mayor Boaz Kansiime Matita said the study tour would provide municipal leaders with an opportunity to learn from Lira City’s development initiatives and adopt relevant practices to improve service delivery and urban infrastructure in Rukungiri Municipality.

The Mayor said one of the key areas of focus would be the development of backstreet business areas, locally referred to as kiosks, which are located behind buildings along the main streets.
Kansiime revealed that the municipality intends to begin with two streets: one running from Home Boys Salon, behind the Centenary Bank building, towards Rwenshama Stage, and another stretching from Hot Pot Hotel, behind Stanbic Bank, towards Jason Grill Bar.
According to the Mayor, the planned improvements will include paving the streets, installing streetlights and undertaking other infrastructure developments to create a better working environment for business operators.
He added that the improvements are also intended to enhance security, improve accessibility and enable business owners to operate more effectively.
