St Francis Buhunga High School Launches UGX 161 Million Fundraising Drive for Laboratory and Library

Rukungiri: St Francis Buhunga High School in Buhunga Sub-county, Rukungiri District, has launched a fundraising drive targeting UGX 161 million to construct a science laboratory and a library after 42 years of waiting for government support to develop the school’s infrastructure.

The fundraising event was held on October 10, at Rutooma Catholic Parish in Buhunga Sub-county. It began with a Holy Mass led by the Vicar General of Kabale Catholic Diocese, Monsignor Dr John Vianney Sunday.

Speaking at the function, the school head teacher, Julius Mugisha Kakwara, said the school was established in 1984 and had faced several infrastructure challenges over the years.

He said the school lacks a science laboratory, a library, enough teachers’ houses, adequate classrooms, a main hall and sufficient teachers on the government payroll.

Kakwara explained that parents had decided to address the challenges one by one, starting with the construction of a laboratory and library because the facilities are essential for improving teaching and learning.

He added that the school’s existing structures had been built by parents, with no government funding for infrastructure development.

The chairperson of the school’s Board of Governance, Rev. Fr Devis Keinamura, questioned why the school had gone more than four decades without government support for infrastructure development despite contributing to education in the area.

He noted that although the government supports the school by paying some teachers, more assistance is needed to address the institution’s infrastructure challenges.

Keinamura appealed to government officials to remember the school and provide support to improve the learning environment for students.

Meanwhile, the parish priest of Rutooma Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr Isaac Turinawe, thanked parents for entrusting the school with their children’s education and encouraged more parents to enrol their children at the institution.

In his homily, the Vicar General of Kabale Catholic Diocese, Monsignor Dr John Vianney Sunday, urged children to respect their parents and other people and to maintain good behaviour.

St Francis Buhunga High School was ranked first in science subject performance in the 2025 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations within the Kigezi sub-region and second across the Ankole and Kigezi sub-regions.

Edger Kasigwa was the guest of honour and Ugx 23 million was raised.
