Rotary Club Holds Reading Competition for Schools in Rukungiri
Rukungiri: The Rotary Club of Rukungiri Central has held a DEAR Day — Drop Everything and Read event aimed at promoting reading and literacy among schoolchildren.
The event was held on October 1, at Rukungiri Inn Hotel in Rukungiri Municipality, where pupils from nine primary schools competed in reading.
The participating schools included Rukungiri Primary School, Nyakibale Lower Primary School, Kinyasano Day and Boarding Primary School, Universal Primary School, Little Angels Nursery and Primary School, St. Paul’s Community Primary School, Star Parents Kindergarten and Primary School, Nyakibale Upper Primary School, and Kiyaga Primary School.
Danella Nuwareba from Kingasano Day and Boarding Primary School emerged in first position with 84 points, followed by Anisha Tumusiime from Universal Primary School with 82 points.
Rhy Loy Abaasa from St. Paul’s Community Primary School scored 81 points to take third position, while Ampeire from Star Parents Kindergarten and Primary School came fourth with 80 points.
Akankunda from Nyakibale Lower Primary School scored 79 points to take fifth position, while Daisy Ainomugisha from Rukungiri Primary School came sixth with 74 points.
Rabecca Nimusiima from Little Angels Nursery and Primary School and Immaculate Tumusime from Nyakibale Upper Primary School both scored 72 points, tying in seventh position.
Emmanuel Andwanaho from Kiyaga Primary School scored 69 points to take ninth position.

The President of Rotary Club Rukungiri Central, Annet Katusiime Mugyenyi, said the club organized the event as part of its monthly activities, with September dedicated to Basic Education and Literacy.
Katusiime said although the club could not hold the activity in September, they decided to organize it on October 1.
She said the competition also helped pupils learn how to stand up for themselves, build confidence and express themselves in public.
Katusiime called on people from different walks of life to join Rotary, saying the club provides an opportunity to serve communities and help one another.

The Inspector of Schools for South Division in Rukungiri Municipality, Gerald Besigye encouraged teachers and parents to ensure that learners complete the syllabus.
Besigye also urged teachers to help children develop confidence and public-speaking skills, saying these can contribute to improved academic performance.
