Mother of Missing Opposition Member Sam Mugumya Seeks Uganda Law Society’s Help.

Rukungiri: The mother of missing opposition member Sam Mugumya has petitioned the Uganda Law Society, asking for help to trace her son, who she says disappeared nearly a year ago.

In a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the President of the Uganda Law Society, Edinasi Katungwensi says her son went missing on 26th August, 2025, while travelling from Mbarara to Kampala to visit her.

In the petition, Katungwensi says she has not seen or heard from her son since that day. Katungwensi says she reported the matter to police in Kampala but did not receive any assistance. She adds that she recently saw a video and a photograph that she believes showed Mugumya alive, giving her renewed hope.

When our reporter visited Katungwensi at her home village in Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri District, Katungwensi said she had not received help from any authorities or politicians. Katungwensi appealed to anyone with information about her son’s whereabouts to come forward.

Sam Mugumya’s uncle, Gershom Mugenyi, who is the Rukungiri District Electoral Commission Chairperson for the PFF party, said the family initially hoped Mugumya would be produced before court if he had committed any offence. Mugenyi called on the government and security agencies to explain his whereabouts.

The Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, Anthony Asiimwe, confirmed receiving Katungwensi’s petition. Asiimwe said the society will follow up the matter and seek information on Mugumya’s whereabouts.

Asiimwe called on the relevant authorities to respect the rule of law by either releasing Mugumya if he is being held or producing him before a competent court if there are any charges against him. He said the Uganda Law Society will continue advocating for the protection of citizens’ rights.
