Tie Vote Forces Rwabugumi and Paula into Power-Sharing Deal in Rukungiri Roads Committee

Rukungiri: A closely contested election for the leadership of the Rukungiri District Roads Committee ended in a tie on July 23, prompting members to adopt a power-sharing arrangement that will see the two candidates each serve as chairperson for two and a half years.

The decision was reached during a Roads Committee meeting held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall. The meeting was attended by the Minister for Security and Member of Parliament for Rujumbura Constituency, Hon. (Rtd.) Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municiplaity, Gen. Henry Tumukunde, Hon. Mathias Mwesigwa Gwabugumi of Rubabo County and the district Woman MP, Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo.

Others include the Rukungiri District LCV Chairperson, the Chief Administrative Officer, the Rukungiri Municipal Mayor, and the District Engineer.

The election attracted two candidates, Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo and Hon. Mathias Gwabugumi. After voting, both candidates secured four votes each, resulting in a deadlock.

To break the stalemate and allow the committee to begin its work, members unanimously agreed that each candidate would serve as chairperson for half of the committee’s five-year term.

Minister Jim Muhwezi described the outcome as a demonstration of unity and political maturity, saying the leaders had chosen cooperation over division.
