UPDF Launches 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary Projects in Rukungiri District
Rukungiri: The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have launched the 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary projects in Rukungiri District as a way of giving back to the community and honoring those who sacrificed during the 1986 liberation struggle.
The district launch ceremony was held on December 3, at Kakonkoma Primary School in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, and was attended by security officials, civil servants, politicians, and community members.
Brigadier Gen. Justus Rukundo, Commandant of Olivia Reginald Tambo Leadership School and Pan-African Centre of Excellence in Kaweweta, Nakaseke District, said this year marks the 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary. He noted that the celebrations are being held in the Kigezi Subregion to honor the lives of those who sacrificed for Uganda’s liberation. He added that the UPDF is launching projects across all six districts of Kigezi as part of the commemoration.

In Rukungiri District, Brig. Gen. Rukundo revealed that several projects are underway. These include construction of a two-classroom block at Kikarara Primary School and Kakonkoma Primary School, an incinerator at Rukungiri Health Centre IV, and a five-stance toilet at Rwakabengo Health Centre III.
The UPDF is constructing staff houses at Ngoma Primary School and Ibanda Primary School. They are also building a four-stance latrine at Bufunda Primary School, supporting Kiyaga Primary School, and constructing a bridge at Kabaranga in Nyakishenyi, among other projects.
He reported that all projects are currently at 70% completion.

The guest of honour, Security Minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, urged Ugandans to vote for President Museveni, praising him for the peace in the country. He described the UPDF as one of the most disciplined forces in the world and thanked the army for giving back to the community.
Maj. Gen. Don Nabasa, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), said the Tarehe Sita activities are held annually in different sub-regions, with this year’s main celebrations scheduled for February 6th next year in Kabale District. He thanked the people of Kigezi for their contribution to Uganda’s liberation.
Former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, applauded the UPDF for consistently supporting communities and urged the public to always remember those who sacrificed for Uganda’s peace. He encouraged Ugandans to support leaders who participated in the liberation struggle and emphasized the importance of sacrifice.
He further thanked President Museveni and his generation for fulfilling their mission by restoring peace in the country.
