Unknown Thieves Steal Gun From Police in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri district are hunting for unknown suspects accused of stealing a police gun — an SMG rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at around 8:30 PM at Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakishenyi Sub-county, Rukungiri District.

According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, it is alleged that on the same day at around 6:00 AM, Police Constable No. 83982 Muyambi Pius reported for normal duty. He reportedly kept his gun in his bedroom, which is adjacent to the police post counter.

At around 8:00 PM, PC Muyambi left for supper at a nearby hotel approximately 60 meters away, leaving the gun inside his room. Upon returning, he discovered the room had been broken into and the firearm was missing.

He immediately alerted neighbors, who responded and confirmed the break-in. He then notified his Officer-in-Charge, who had been away seeking medical treatment.

The scene was visited by the OC Station Rukungiri and a K-9 team, but no positive leads were found.

PC Muyambi was arrested for questioning, and investigations are ongoing.

Police have called on the public to remain vigilant. Anyone who notices suspicious individuals or objects is urged to report to local leaders or the nearest security office to aid in the arrest of the suspects.
