UNGU-XI Commander Urges Respectful Leadership and Vigilance Amid Al-Shabaab Threat

Somalia: The Commander of Uganda’s United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) in Somalia, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has called on officers and department heads to lead with discipline, respect, and vigilance as they carry out their duties under the United Nations mandate.

During a commander’s update briefing at the UNGU-XI headquarters in Mogadishu on July 26, Lt Col Barigye emphasized the importance of ethical and empathetic leadership. He reminded officers that successful mission outcomes depend on mutual respect and collaboration between commanders and their troops.

Lt Col Barigye encouraged leaders to foster a positive work culture rooted in discipline and meaningful engagement, highlighting that such an environment boosts both operational efficiency and troop morale.

Addressing the ongoing security situation, Lt Col Barigye warned against underestimating the persistent threat posed by the extremist group Al-Shabaab. While there has been a period of calm around Mogadishu, he cautioned that the threat remains and urged officers to maintain a high level of vigilance and adaptability.

He also commended the officers for their efforts in maintaining administrative cohesion and ensuring alignment with the mission’s strategic objectives. The commander concluded by urging continued preparedness and discipline to effectively respond to any potential threats.
